What is Sleep Apnoea?

Sleep apnoea can potentially be a serious condition in which breathing frequently stops and starts. It can be categorised into 3 types – Central, Obstructive and Mixed. Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA) is the most common of the three, whereby the breathing stops due to some level of obstruction. Although risk factors include obesity, sex (male) and high blood pressure, it may occur in any class of population”. We also need to have a self-assessment tool where we provide the questionnaire for patients to mark themselves.

Some common acute symptoms of the disease are:

01
Snoring
02
Waking up with a dry mouth
03
Day time fatigue and lack of concentration
04
Insomnia

If you suffer from any of the above, you may suffer from sleep apnoea*.

The chronic symptoms are caused by the lack of oxygen entering the lungs when patients experience airway collapse during sleep. Long term oxygen desaturation may lead to chronic symptoms such as atrial fibrillation, increased risk of stroke and anginas.

Consult your doctor for a review, you may be eligible for a bulk-billed sleep study.
