Mandibular Splint
A custom-made prescription medical device worn in the mouth which may be used to treat obstructive sleep apnoea or snoring. This treatment option may be suitable for an individual who does not tolerate CPAP treatment or referred to by their sleep physician. It serves to reduce the severity of obstructive sleep apnoea by pushing the lower jaw slightly forward.
It does require a referral from a sleep physician who may recommend this treatment after weighing up the pros and cons. Although our team does not deal with mandibular splints directly, we can help source dental clinics which may be able to assist.
Surgery
This treatment option is often reserved for individuals with severe sleep apnoea who may be non-responsive to other treatments. The purpose of the procedure is to remove the anatomical obstruction which leads to blockage of the airways during sleep. This treatment decision will involve the General practitioner and the input of an ENT specialist (Otolaryngologist). There are several methods of surgery which are individual specific.
